A Break With Tradition -- 'I Chose Not to Have My Dad Give Me Away'
The first thing you need to know is that Dan asked me to marry him while we were brushing our teeth. We had been together for almost 10 years at that point, living together for five, and we had plenty of people despairing as to whether we would ever get around to tying the knot. We finally settled matters after flossing.
Big romantic gestures? Not our thing. We like to lie around eating ice cream straight from the container and watching "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" reruns. But then we jumped into planning mode for the wedding, a day that's supposed to be nothing but romantic moments and symbolic traditions. And even two cynics like ourselves couldn't help getting caught up in all the excitement.
When it came time to plan the ceremony, however, I started getting grouchy again. We'd nixed a church service early on because neither of us are religious, but going the plan-your-own route was fraught with problems too. Unity candles, planting trees, live music -- we kept hating idea after idea.
We are not unity-candle people. (Or sand-pouring people. What is that even about?) We are certainly not comfortable around a string quartet. And then I started thinking (some might say over-thinking) about the most basic parts of the ceremony -- like how we would walk into my parents' garden -- and realized that the traditional father-gives-away-the-bride entrance wasn't going to work for us either.
As a feminist, I didn't love the notion of being handed over (and my father-in-law-to-be kept making jokes about needing to negotiate my price in head of cattle, which didn't help.) But there was also the fact that Dan and I already had a life together with an apartment, a car, two cats and a shared AmEx bill that we fight over every month; we had already survived high school, college and eating guinea pig on a trip to Peru. I wasn't leaving some earlier version of myself behind to become his wife.
Plus, here we were planning this day to be a celebration of us -- but if we followed "tradition," we would spend the bulk of the day sequestered from each other, until the moment I walked down the aisle.
Then, from somewhere, the idea came to me: We should scrap that plan and walk in together. Dan loved it. He had started hyperventilating as soon as I told him how much my dress would cost, and I think maybe this little tweak helped assure him that we hadn't become Stepford Wedding People. We were keeping it real. (Plus he didn't relish the groom's usual pre-ceremony role of having to meet and greet while wandering around in a nervous daze. Why shouldn't he get to stay behind the scenes as long as possible, too?)
Even more surprisingly, my dad loved it, too. He's a forward-thinking guy, but you know fathers and daughters. I was worried that deep down he might be hurt, but too easy-going to admit it. So I broached the subject carefully (and, uh, via email -- which might sound chicken, but my dad hates talking on the phone, and I knew email would give him time to process, instead of putting him on the spot.)
To my surprise, he said that he had been thinking that giving me away by himself didn't feel right; he would want, at the very least, for my mom to walk down the aisle, too. And really, when you got right down to it, my stepmom and stepdad should also be there, because they put just about as much time and energy into raising me. And then you're trying to fit five people (with me in a not-small dress and carrying a big bouquet) down a tiny little aisle, and the whole thing starts to get a little sitcom-in-sweeps week.
So my parents sat in the front row, radiating pride and joy. As my dad said, "Anyone who isn't sure whether I'm the father of the bride will just have to see me beaming and they'll know!" And Dan and I hid together at the bottom of my parents' garden, watching all of our friends and family take their seats. We were nervous. We were excited. We held hands and cracked each other up. And for two people who are so squeamish about romance and symbolism, it ended up being an incredibly sweet, and dare I say, romance-filled moment. Big romantic gestures? Not our thing. We like to lie around eating ice cream straight from the container and watching "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" reruns. But then we jumped into planning mode for the wedding, a day that's supposed to be nothing but romantic moments and symbolic traditions. And even two cynics like ourselves couldn't help getting caught up in all the excitement.
When it came time to plan the ceremony, however, I started getting grouchy again. We'd nixed a church service early on because neither of us are religious, but going the plan-your-own route was fraught with problems too. Unity candles, planting trees, live music -- we kept hating idea after idea.
We are not unity-candle people. (Or sand-pouring people. What is that even about?) We are certainly not comfortable around a string quartet. And then I started thinking (some might say over-thinking) about the most basic parts of the ceremony -- like how we would walk into my parents' garden -- and realized that the traditional father-gives-away-the-bride entrance wasn't going to work for us either.
As a feminist, I didn't love the notion of being handed over (and my father-in-law-to-be kept making jokes about needing to negotiate my price in head of cattle, which didn't help.) But there was also the fact that Dan and I already had a life together with an apartment, a car, two cats and a shared AmEx bill that we fight over every month; we had already survived high school, college and eating guinea pig on a trip to Peru. I wasn't leaving some earlier version of myself behind to become his wife.
Plus, here we were planning this day to be a celebration of us -- but if we followed "tradition," we would spend the bulk of the day sequestered from each other, until the moment I walked down the aisle.
Then, from somewhere, the idea came to me: We should scrap that plan and walk in together. Dan loved it. He had started hyperventilating as soon as I told him how much my dress would cost, and I think maybe this little tweak helped assure him that we hadn't become Stepford Wedding People. We were keeping it real. (Plus he didn't relish the groom's usual pre-ceremony role of having to meet and greet while wandering around in a nervous daze. Why shouldn't he get to stay behind the scenes as long as possible, too?)
Even more surprisingly, my dad loved it, too. He's a forward-thinking guy, but you know fathers and daughters. I was worried that deep down he might be hurt, but too easy-going to admit it. So I broached the subject carefully (and, uh, via email -- which might sound chicken, but my dad hates talking on the phone, and I knew email would give him time to process, instead of putting him on the spot.)
To my surprise, he said that he had been thinking that giving me away by himself didn't feel right; he would want, at the very least, for my mom to walk down the aisle, too. And really, when you got right down to it, my stepmom and stepdad should also be there, because they put just about as much time and energy into raising me. And then you're trying to fit five people (with me in a not-small dress and carrying a big bouquet) down a tiny little aisle, and the whole thing starts to get a little sitcom-in-sweeps week.
So my parents sat in the front row, radiating pride and joy. As my dad said, "Anyone who isn't sure whether I'm the father of the bride will just have to see me beaming and they'll know!" And Dan and I hid together at the bottom of my parents' garden, watching all of our friends and family take their seats. We were nervous. We were excited. We held hands and cracked each other up. And for two people who are so squeamish about romance and symbolism, it ended up being an incredibly sweet, and dare I say, romance-filled moment. Jo-Ann Barnas: Ernie Harwell's kindness left a lasting impression
Here's what I've found to be most remarkable today, less than 24 hours after the passing of Ernie Harwell: Doesn't it seem like every resident in the state of Michigan -- and, yes, I know there are roughly 9.9 million of us -- has an Ernie story?
I heard dozens on the radio this morning, folks calling into 97.1 The Ticket and sharing their encounters with Harwell and how they were positively affected by the man.
Those who never had the opportunity to meet him personally, well, they felt like they knew him, which was one of his greatest attributes.
I admired Ernie because he was: 1. a gentleman and 2. a terrific writer. I have a signed copy of one of his Free Press books, "Stories From My Life in Baseball." He was an amazing storyteller on the printed page, not just over the airwaves.
I've written about this before, but I still shake my head in amazement every time I think about the time a few years ago when he left a message on my answering machine, saying he liked a story I had written on John Smoltz. I was stunned that he actually would take the time to do that. But that was Ernie.
Those who know me best know that I come from a large family. I have seven siblings, five of whom are brothers.
I called two this afternoon to talk about Harwell, and -- wouldn't you know? -- both of them had met him.
My older brother, John, 51, was introduced to him a few years ago at a function benefiting Ele's Place, a healing center for children coping with the death or illness of parents or a loved one. Ernie spoke of his challenge in coping with the deaths his mother and father, which occurred within a year of each other.
John also shared an amusing story about how he and his good friend, Jeff Beers, sneaked a transistor radio into Tiger Stadium for the last game of the season in 1991 to listen to Harwell broadcast what then was his "final'' game, when he was ousted by Bo Schembechler.
When they got close enough to call out his name, they did -- and Harwell smiled and waved back.

How Far Can Forever Be
Now I finally understand that forever is actually easy to expect, for it comes when we are loving and being loved.
Forever is not as far as we cannot see, but it is as near as we can experience in every minute.
Forever is right now.
ONE
I used to like riding my bicycle alone, hanging around the boundary of my small town.
It was a little pretty town away from hustle and bustle, whose outlying fields were covered with a huge mass of golden rape flowers that would dazzle you at first sight during the sunny season.
The air was so nice and fresh that my nose wing could not help itself broadening to take a deep breath, which brought along the gentle and delicate fragrance of the rape flowers, mixed with the bitter smell of greenness from the soil. It smelt true and natural. The effulgence of the sunshine would blow on my face when I was galloping with my bike on the flat concrete road, that would make me feel like to close my eyes lightly, and to slowly spread out my arms, flying just like the heroine in City Of Angels. I was inebriated with the enjoyment of freedom.
It was Gi Gi’s Sook that I was always crooning; and there must be a little happiness when a peaceful and satisfied smile appearing on my face. I would keep the innocent joy in the beaming eyes and on the leisured eyebrows, and keep it forever, since I was young and carefree.

This was a just zoned high-technological development area. The small town presented an entirely new appearance after few years: the serried high-technological industries, immigratory campuses of universities, new transplants, and quick leap of vehicles had made the small town busy and dusty.
Since then there was no more cycling alone or wandering around, even I became busy. I was busy with the national entrance examination, my English and going abroad.
I still remember the spare time when I was waiting for my visa. I had a boyfriend who once accompanied me to take a walk after the self-study lessons at night.
Holding hands, we were passing by the clearing that used to be the farms full of fragrant rape flowers. We were surprised and sighed pleasantly at how much we had been changed to each other, and we went aftertaste of sweet memories together. Riding bicycle, he was carrying me on the backseat roaming around the boundary of my small town. Even though everything had been changed, I was happy as if yesterday once more – I had my little simple joy again.
I would not believe in forever, since I just wanted to hold love once intensely and tightly. I had never given promises, but deep inside my lonely heart, I was dreaming secretly about a promise last forever. That is me – an inconsistent Gemini, who would never find the way to forever.

The melody was so elegant and heavenly, and the rhythm was so mild and tender. Every note that flowed in my ears felt like a splash when running rivulets dashing against cobblestones, which could wash down my heavy soul and make me feel refreshed and free from worry.
Suddenly the words of forever that he once told me arose, flashing through my mind.
Then whimsically I was wondering when that day of forever would come.
How far on earth can forever be?
At Melbourne Central train station, Mum’s Voice through the phone line gave me a sense of peace and warmth, “My girl, there’s no need to worry about troubles of your own imagining, just enjoy your every day. C’est la vie.”
“And there’s one thing to remember: Mum and Dad will love you forever,” she added.
I almost burst into tears when hearing that word “forever”.
“I’ll love you forever too, Mum,” I said.
At that moment, I realized that it can be so natural and easy to speak out the word “forever”, that forever is when we are loving and being loved, that every day or every minute can be imperishable, that forever is born to be pure and simple, and that forever can be as near as right now.

The melody was so elegant and heavenly, and the rhythm was so mild and tender. Every note that flowed in my ears felt like a splash when running rivulets dashing against cobblestones, which could wash down my heavy soul and make me feel refreshed and free from worry.
Suddenly the words of forever that he once told me arose, flashing through my mind.
Then whimsically I was wondering when that day of forever would come.
How far on earth can forever be?
At Melbourne Central train station, Mum’s Voice through the phone line gave me a sense of peace and warmth, “My girl, there’s no need to worry about troubles of your own imagining, just enjoy your every day. C’est la vie.”
“And there’s one thing to remember: Mum and Dad will love you forever,” she added.
I almost burst into tears when hearing that word “forever”.

At that moment, I realized that it can be so natural and easy to speak out the word “forever”, that forever is when we are loving and being loved, that every day or every minute can be imperishable, that forever is born to be pure and simple, and that forever can be as near as right now.
Then I started to run back through my memories like scenes in a movie flashing past my eyes: in the beauteous summer time when the sweet flavor of watermelon still remained in the air, we used to be laughing, hand in hand, sailing through avenues and alleyways; and we used to be holding each other, riding the bicycle, and crossing muddy fields; and we used to be leaning on each other, sitting on the bus, and enjoying the night scene in the city.
I miss my small town, and the times of cycling around alone; and I miss Mum and Dad; and I miss him. In fact, love has never left. Forever is not far away. It is now.
